India has become the first country to have landed on the lunar south pole as its moon mission Chandrayaan-3 conducted a successful landing.
“India is on the moon,” chief of Indian Space Research Organization Sreedhara Somanath told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who joined the event virtually from Johannesburg, where he is attending the BRICS Summit.
Modi termed the event “Historic day for India’s space sector.”
ISRO wrote on X, formerly Twitter, “Chandrayaan-3 has successfully soft-landed on the moon !. Congratulations, India.”
India has now joined a list of a few countries – the US, Russia and China – who have achieved the feat of successfully landing a spacecraft on the moon.
Chandrayaan-3 moon mission took flight from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota in southern Andhra Pradesh state in July.
India’s Chandrayaan-2 mission in 2019 failed after its lander ‘Vikram’ crashed into the surface of the moon. The first Chandrayaan mission was launched in 2008.
